Metabolism 101: Tutorial 2 - The metabolic crisis
For the non-metabolic
Course Title:
Metabolism 101: The metabolic crisis
Program Overview:
Many metabolic diseases are associated with acute clinical or biochemical decompensation, i.e., a metabolic crisis. This type of presentation is among the most characterized aspects of metabolic disease and also the most feared since such events represent true medical emergencies. However, crises also tend to occur in mostly treatable disorders. The clinical symptoms and signs of a crisis are outlined, along with a review of some classic disease phenotypes, and an approach for testing for a possible metabolic diagnosis.

Learning Objectives:
1.Characterize the symptoms of a metabolic crisis
2.Describe the clinical scenarios in which catabolism is active
3.List the triggers that can set off a metabolic crisis
4.Identify the basic testing to order in the case where metabolic disease is a consideration
5.List the testing in a “metabolic screen
